Celebrating the life of

Dolores Roche Highland

September 16, 1930 - September 28, 2023

Dolores Roche Highland

Dolores Roche Highland, 93, died peacefully in Savannah, Georgia on September 28, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Chicago, Illinois, the only child of the late Frances Emmett Roche and Helene Madsen Roche.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Henry “Bootie” Highland. They met at Washington College after he returned as a World War II Veteran. Their 48-year marriage was an inspiration to all who knew them. They truly were “one love, one lifetime.” She completed her undergraduate and graduate degrees while raising four children. She received the President’s Award at Armstrong State College in 1968.

Dolores Highland’s favorite saying was “this is not a rehearsal!” and she lived her life to the fullest. She was an avid reader, traveler, and lover of music. She sang in the Cathedral choir and belonged to the Record Club. She loved musicals and acted in the Little Theater for many years. She taught in the Savannah Public Schools for 17 years. She was an active member of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and read at the 8:00 Mass. She spent summers swimming and skiing on the May River in Bluffton. In retirement, she painted, played bridge, traveled, and adored her grandchildren.

She leaves behind her children Victoria Highland Guenther (Gregory), Brett Highland (Jennifer), Corey Highland (Margaret), Emmett Highland (Jennie); grandchildren Eric Guenther (Rebecca Butler), Anna Guenther (David Libens), Suzanne Highland, Abigail Highland, Harrison Highland, William Highland (Jenna), Madison Highland, Conor Highland; and great-grandchild, Lucas Guenther.

She will be laid to rest with her husband as part of a family service at Beauford National Cemetery.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Azalealand and Hospice Savannah.

A funeral Mass will be held at the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist at 10:00am on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.

In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, 222 East Harris Street, Savannah, GA 31401 or to a charity of your choice.
